How lovely would it be if porsche stuck 2 of their GT3 engines together and made a 1000 horsepower flat 12

I’ve been thinking about this for a few days now and I think that would be absolutely phenomenon. I don’t know what they would put it, probably some kind of homage to the 917 or in that 908-04 render. Just a late night thought.

The problem with a flat 12 is that, apparently, the power gains start to drop off dramatically once you start going past 6 cylinders.

Questions and ideas like this are why I joined oppo. We need more of these!

How about they stick it in the next rendition of the 918? Just widen it a slight bit, lengthen it a slight bit and then just route the exhaust out the back of the car. I’m sure the PDK could handle it (No, no manual. I don’t care who you are, you are not capable of shifting fast enough for that kind of engine).

That would work. Take all the hybrid junk out of a 918 and cram this in and give it a long tail while they’re at it. They wouldn’t need to make many but the thought of 1000 naturally aspirated horsepower at 9000 rpm just makes me all not and bothered.

You and me both. I’m trying to imagine all 12 cylinders singing at 9000 rpm and my body just can’t contain itself. It will sound like a mini-F1 car. Add on a splitter in the front and you’ve got one hell of a beautiful car.

You may be able to cram in some regenerative energy to keep the torque into 9000 rpm since I recall a video where the Porsche engine designer said it only goes to 9000 rpm for some added sound and peak torque is around 8900 rpm. If you slap the hybrid system in then you might be able to supplement the torque into 9000 rpm for pure function. Since the engine will be a flat 12 it should have more vertical space than the v8.

I wonder if there any old witchcraft that could be coaxed out of their LeMans winning 917 to help these out singe those were also powered by a N/A flat 12. What would the torque on this theoretical engine be, something just 700 pound feet right?

It wouldn’t just sound like a mini f1 car either, that would be 8 liters if fury which would sound like the Muslane straight in 1969 with the Ferraris and Porsche and I think Matra.

From the Porsche site the GT2 RS engine outputs 553 lbft of torque. I’d wager this theoretical engine is able to at least put out 900 lbft easily.

I imagine it’ll be like being strapped to a rocket.

The 991.2 GT3 is like 340 so it should be at least double that. This theoretical flat 12 would weigh a lot but it would also be lighter than a veyron. The 918 has a drag coefficient of. 36 which is more than the veyron and about the same as the McLaren F1 (I think) so this thing should pull until at least 220

They have this thing lying around somewhere:

https://www.supercars.net/blog/1971-porsche-917-16-cylinder-prototype/

With modern metallurgy and advances in engine design, this could produce at least 1500bhp imo

I mean that’s what they got out of their turbocharged 917/30K engine so the could probably get quite a bit more today. Looking at the specific output of the 919 EVO which makes it 360 horsepower per liter, assuming it lost no efficiency it would be pumping out a bit over 2400 HP. Throw in a couple of variable geometry turbos for good measure and you’d have an unstoppable track monster.

Yup!

The only issue is fitting such a large and heavy (at least 700lb)engine in a modern chassis. No cars made today have such a long engine. Don’t know how heavy the whole car will be and how it will affect the handling.

The other issue is that it would be too fast to drive imo. I have driven a 917/30 in quali trip virtually (Assetto Corsa) and it is stupendously fast. Adding another 900 bhp to that engine would be crazy!

Oh no human could drive it without stupendous computer assistance. I bet something like the computer control system on the 488 pista would help quite a bit. I honestly think the bigger problem would be tires, imagine trying to get traction out of a corner with that thing. If you look at any of those crazy 2000+hp standing mile lamborghini builds, you always see them take off and accelerate pretty slowly until at least 100 or so.

Realistically trying to contain something like this just doesn’t look feasible unless you start doing something exotic like make it a fan car.

First of all, Holy fuck crap, what a dyno pull!!!

Tyres may not be such a big issue. All those street cars use off the shelf or custom made but steertable tyres. Imagine a custom made racing slick not bound by any regulations. I’m by no means a knowledge person when it comes to high performance tyres, but it may not be as hard as you think.

But it’s not as long, the flat 16 has 8 cylinder in a bank. The w16 has only 4 iirc.

Funny story about that. I finished my first year of law school but I hated every second of it. It got bad, like wanting to get into an accident with a truck everyday on the way to school bad. I’ve always wanted to be an engineer (literally since preschool) but I never had the courage to face the math because of some bad teachers and my dislexia. When I hit rock bottom in law school (I was having like 20 panic attacks a day), it finally gave me the courage to try and make it as an engineer because nothing would have been words than finishing my JD. I dropped out after finishing up 1L. I’m enrolled at the best community College in the state (which unfortunately makes me drive 44 miles each way) . I’m now 2 semesters in with above a 3.3 GPA in my physics and math classes and I’m going to be transferring to a 4 year in about a year to collect my second bachelor’s degree. My life definitely took a bit of a right turn but the woman I was dating at the time pushed me to follow my dreams and now I’m engaged and getting married in under a year. So yeah, I was in law school but not anymore.

True that...

I guess VW engineers are ingenious enough to find a way to make a flat 16 TT fit into a competent chassis.

As a side note, I’m amazed how the VR architecture went from a quicky, fun engine to the most powerful production engine.

Well I’ve definitely missed that update if you posted about it. I’m glad to hear you’re making progress towards what you really wanted to do though! That’s always a nice feeling even if it takes a little longer.

I can sort of relate. I took a corporate job that sounded like a decent step at the time after getting my bachelors in a pure science. Turns out I absolutely hate the department the corporate job is in. I enjoy corporate life but I really wish I had become a software engineer.

Well, I’m in business school now and I honestly feel like I belong for the first time every time I get to class. Those classmates are like family to me. Recently I’ve been heading into a dark place more and more though. It’s kind of scary when on Sunday night you get a panic attack that you have to go back to the job you loathe on Monday. Although at the same time I genuinely appreciate the paycheck since it’s what’s paying for my education and bills. All I can do now is suck it up. I’m hanging on until I find something better and I’ll take it.

See, you’re almost got it. You need to go for a W-18 like one of those old early 2000s bugatti prototypes.

I really do relate to that feeling. I consider myself the luckiest guy in the world because I’m only 22 and I get the chance to make a 180 in my life without any consequence. My first bachelor’s degree was a fun 3 years and I leaned a lot but I’m a significantly better student now and I would never have succeed if I started my first degree as an engineering student. The law school thing was a bit of an odd detour but that can easily be traced back to loosing my father about 2 months before my junior year of college. (thats another weird and winding story for another day though. some people might drink, I just graduated early and learned basic contract law). When I graduate and enter the workforce I should it be like 25 with 2 badass bachelor’s degrees and a wonderful supporting wife and there are certainly worse things than that.

Congrats on finding your path in business school btw, no one should be stuck in a job they hate like that.

Sometimes we just need to realize how much taking the easy way sucks before we do what we really want. It’s good that you are on a better path we all deserve to be in the right path.

The funny thing is we’re pretty close in age. I’m 25 and took a little longer to make the same realization you did. Yeah I’m always thankful I got into business school. I’m afraid to think what would happen if I hadn’t gotten in.

Congrats on the engagement and future wedding too!

.why not just bolt together 2 big blocks(with a little bit of power(cam and intake)) , and stuff it into something with a little bit of room, like an old van or something?
